Indian Head Massage

What is Indian Head Massage?

IHM is a head, face, neck and shoulder massage that you receive while clothed and seated.

What are its Origins?

In India and other Asian countries, Indian Head Massage is passed down in the family from generation to generation. It is an ancient tradition that is over 4000 years old.

There are a variety of different routines of the massage. Many Indian babies are given IHM a few days after they are born and then daily till they are 3 years old. At the age of 6 they are being taught on how to give it to others themselves.

In India the massage is performed only on the scalp but in the west the routine has been adapted to include the upper back, shoulders, neck and face. My routine also includes some calming and balancing subtle energy work.

Is IHM suitable for everyone?

Most people can receive IHM but there are some medical conditions that might mean I cannot perform a treatment or will adapt the treatment to suit that client’s needs. A consultation is taken prior to the treatment and this will be discussed there.

What happens during an IHM treatment?

During an IHM treatment you will be seated in a chair, with a low back.  Preferably you will wear a light shirt, vest or t shirt. I will then perform a massage routine to the upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp  that lasts approximately 30 minutes.

I can incorporate the use of massage oil into the routine depending on your preference. As a qualified Aromatherapist, I can make my own blends to suit your needs. If you choose an IHM treatment with oil then a towel can be provided for your convenience so that your shoulders and upper back can be bare.
The massage is tailored to whatever you need – relaxation or revitalisation – and a lasting effect can be achieved with a short treatment. Repeated treatments can be even more beneficial.

What are the benefits of IHM?
