Alzheimers and Dementia sufferers can benefit from Aromatherapy & Reflexology

Back in November, I was contacted by a daughter asking me to give Aromatherapy foot massages to her mother, aged 73, with Alzheimer’s. The mother (let’s call her Mary) was agitated, distressed and very upset at being in a home and didn’t understand why she had to be there and was weepy. She was beginning to be a little aggressive, just by clasping other’s hands tightly and not letting go.

I started going be monthly, giving her Aromatherapy foot massages and soon the family asked me to visit Mary on a weekly basis. After a few treatments she began to recognise me. A little smile came on her face, but she was still weepy and a little agitated.

Then one week she said that I was a clever girl and touched me on the nose, so trust and progress was being made. I had begun to give more of a Reflexology treatment with Bergamot lotion so that I could work on the appropriate reflexes to help her nervous system, hormones and other useful reflex points to help her anxiety.

Last week , I received an email from her husband saying how relaxed Mary had been both times he had visited her that week and I saw it for myself when I visited her this week. The staff told me that she was relaxed. She was sleepy but she wasn’t weepy, stressed or agitated. just calm and relaxed.

The family has shown their confidence in the treatments by quite unexpectedly paying me upfront for the next 10 sessions. Quite flattering and very welcome in January!

Yesterday Morning a lovely client hosted an Aromatherapy Shopping Morning. I gave an informative talk about Aromatherapy and Essential Oils and then showed the 10 guests my Aromatherapy Product Range.

It was a lovely morning and the guests were very appreciative and loved my products and bought for themselves as well as doing some early Christmas Shopping.

My hostess, Julie, provided some nibbles and drinks. All in all it was a lovely way to spend a Monday morning.

Lavender Essential Oil and its uses

You could put 6 drops in a full bath and relax in it for 10 minutes or so. It is a great way of promoting a good sleep.

I usually carry a small bottle in my handbag. It is an excellent 1st Aid tool, helping with bites, stings, scratches, bumps and knocks.

You could put 6 drops in your rinse cycle when doing the laundry.

Children find lavender very comforting a bed time. they like to hold and smell a couple of drops on some rolled up kitchen paper to help them drift off to sleep.

Diluted in a suitable vegetable or nut oil, such as sweet almond or grapeseed, Lavender may help ease many different kinds of aches and pains.

May Chang (Litsea Cubeba) added to Store

With its delightful lemonly aroma, May Chang is all the rage at the moment.

May Chang is primarily used for its uplifting qualities. It is calming and reduces fatigue.

However people use it also for when someone has a cold or flu, feels hot and has muscle ache.

May Chang is also calming and is useful if you cannot sleep. You could try and combine it in a blend with Lavender and Roman Chamomile.

May Chang is also good for oily skn (used in small doses and well diluted) and has a cooling effect. Due to its astringent quality it can be used in facial toners, again in small doses.

Indian Head Massage Course Update and Baby Reflexology

Last week I started an Indian Head Massage course which will run until January and then I will be accredited. Indian Head Massage is an easy way to receive a head, face, shoulder and neck massage. You remain fully clothed and just sit in a chair and enjoy the massage.

It will be a great extra service to offer and will also be perfect for Pamper Days and Hen Parties.

On Saturday, I went to a 1 day workshop on Baby Reflexology. It really was fascinating to hear how much Reflexology and acupressure on the feet can help babies, mothers and fathers in so many ways.

Babies basic requirements are Love and Respect. Touch is essential for the baby’s development. It helps develop the synapses to the brain and aids the baby’s growth. Babies must have loving touch as much as possible.

Unfortunately many mothers and fathers, for a variety of reasons, do not bond or connect to their babies. Baby reflexology is a very simple basic thing to do. It only takes 5 minutes, maximum 3 times a day. The bond between baby and parent grows and all thrive.

The usual reaction when I say I have been to a baby Reflexology Workshop is: Why do babies need Reflexology?

Just think of some of the common problems babies have: Constipation, wind, colic, asthma, colds…I am sure now you can think of more.

Baby Reflexology can really help with these problems.
