Stress, Deep Relaxation and Aromatherapy

This is an article I wrote around 15 years ago. I have just found it and thought I could share it again.

Stress, Deep Relaxation and Aromatherapy.

Stress is the main cause of of illness. Nevertheless we hear people say that the “thrive” on stress. This is an illusion. A long term overload of stress eventually leads to malfunctioning on a physical, emotional and mental level.

What is Stress?

A stressful situation, anger and anxiety all activate the adrenal glands to release the hormone adrenalin, often referred to as the “fight of flight” response. This puts our physical systems on red alert. It speeds up breathing and heart rate, constricts blood vessels, slows down digestion and kidney activity. Designed for short , sharp periods to protect primitive man from danger, in modern man adrenalin is often in constant production. This puts the heart, lungs, blood vessels, muscles, digestion and urinary system under constant duress or distress.
Negative stress puts the body under such tension as to to impair basic cellular functioning, often manifesting itself in an ailment in a person’s “weak spot”. Stress is like a tourniquet cutting off blood and nerve supply. On a more subtle level, vital energy cannot flow correctly through the channels or meridians.

Most of us hold on to tensions in our body habitually, without being conscious of it. We keep out shoulders raised, our teeth clenched or our hand held in a fist. It is amazing how hard it is to “let go”. But it is just in those places to which we hold on to the most that we will cause disorders. This also holds true for emotional and mental disorders.

Deep Relaxation Restores Balance And Harmony

When we relax deeply we let go right down to our cells and allow our body to flow again, harnessing its natural healing abilities. We release emotional and mental tensions as well. Therefore regular deep relaxation helps promote and maintain physical, emotional and mental health, restoring harmony and balance. Deep relaxation, combined with a healthy lifestyle is a very important factor in all round good health.

What is Deep Relaxation?

Deep relaxation is not the same as sleeping or just resting. In deep relaxation our brain waves slow down to a lower frequency known as Alpha. Every day,” on the go”  brain waves are known as Beta. The more we relax, the deeper we go into the  Alpha state and in this state relaxation and letting go are very significantly deeper than in ordinary rest or sleep.

Yoga, Aromatherapy Massage, Reflexology, Reiki,  certain types of music and dance and enjoying nature are some of the excellent ways of entering the Alpha state.

Aromatherapy and Deep Relaxation

Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy using therapeutic essential oils extracted from aromatic plants. Essential oils have a multitude of therapeutic properties and many of them have an aroma which for most people have an immediate calming and relaxing effect. Used in the bath, burner or diluted in a carrier oil for massage, these oils are an excellent aid to meditation and will enhance any mode of entering the Alpha state.

Professional Aromatherapy treatments are first and foremost extremely relaxing. They are a wonderful way of letting go of the stresses and strains of life. Aromatherapy treatments combine the luxury of touch, of feeling good, deep relaxation and wonderful aromas (specially chosen for you) with the many benefits of massage. You can relax deeply, enjoy a therapeutic massage whilst undergoing a holistic healing process.

Many ailments such as backaches, various aches and pains, muscular and nervous tension, insomnia, emotional disturbances, headaches, skin complaints, menstrual and digestive disorders and many more can all be helped by Aromatherapy.

A professional Aromatherapist will give you advice on daily deep relaxation at  home in between treatments, suggest appropriate oils to use at home and  give advice on exercise an diet.

Aromatherapy is probably the best complementary therapy for combating stress. Try it and see for yourself.

There is a great range of relaxing oils to choose from and nearly everybody can find one or more suited to his or her personality and personal taste. The essential oils can be combined in synthesis to create a unique personal and relaxing aroma.

There  are scires if essential oils on the market, however I recommend the folowing to induce relaxation and help counteract stress: Bergamot, Geranium , Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Roman Chamomile, Frankincense, Vetivert, Clary Sage, Rose, Neroli and Jasmine.

Why not have a look at my store page at some of the blends I have created: Relaxation, Restful Sleep, Sensual, Uplift. These are available in pure essential oil drop form, as bubble bath/shower gel and as ready to use massage oils. I also sell a wonderful Organic French Lavender. I am in the process of adding a more comprehensive list of essential oils to my site. If you cannot find the oils you want there, please contact me  to discuss availability.

Please note: Make sure you ask for professional advice or refer to reliable literature when choosing and using essential oils. Ensure that they are of the highest quality. Some oils are unsuitable for the following conditions: High and low blood pressure, Pregnancy, Asthma and Epilepsy. http://www.lorrainedoron.com/content/terms-conditions-safe-use-of-essential-oils/

Indian Head Massage Course Update and Baby Reflexology

Last week I started an Indian Head Massage course which will run until January and then I will be accredited. Indian Head Massage is  an easy way to receive a head, face, shoulder and neck massage. You remain fully clothed and just sit in a chair and enjoy the massage.

It will be a great extra service to offer and will also be perfect for Pamper Days and Hen Parties.

On Saturday, I went to a 1 day workshop on Baby Reflexology. It really was fascinating to hear how much Reflexology and acupressure on the feet can help babies, mothers and fathers in so many ways.

Babies basic requirements are Love and Respect. Touch is essential for the baby’s development. It helps develop the synapses to the brain and aids the baby’s growth. Babies must have loving touch as much as possible.

Unfortunately many mothers and fathers, for a variety of reasons, do not bond or connect to their babies. Baby reflexology is a very simple basic thing to do. It only takes 5 minutes, maximum 3 times a day. The bond between baby and parent grows and all thrive.

The usual reaction when I say I have been to a baby Reflexology Workshop is: Why do babies need Reflexology?

Just think of some of the common problems babies have: Constipation, wind, colic, asthma, colds…I am sure now you can think of more.

Baby Reflexology can really help with these problems.

Newsletter September 2009

Feetivities

In my May newsletter, I mentioned the foot massages I gave at a wedding at Ashdown Park Hotel. Within minutes of emailing the newsletter, I received a call from a client and friend Morag Turner offering to put me in touch with some wedding planners in Kent. It instantly struck me that Morag would be a perfect partner for this new venture and Feetivities was born. It has been a busy few months putting together a lovely brochure and promoting the service to wedding planners, bridal shops, florists, venues, bridal magazines and local papers. Now, at the beginning of wedding season, we are bracing ourselves for the rush of excited brides looking for that extra boost for their special day.

We have already caught the attention of both national and local press. Read more about Feetivities and myself in the Jewish Chronicle on September 11th and in the East Grinstead observer by the end of September.

Feetivities will lend its relaxing touch to any special occasion and brings a variety of relaxing treatment to hen nights and the “day before”.

My Practice

My practice is still ticking along well considering the financial climate. July and August were surprisingly busy on the whole and I continue to help clients with a variety of needs.

My Aromatherapy, Lymph Drainage and Reflexology clinic offers relief and help for hormonal imbalances, conception difficulties, stress, digestive problems and all kinds of aches and pains.

I also continue to give very relaxing Facials. Apart from enjoying the plant based products used to nourish, rejuvenate and revitalise their face, my clients also benefit from my long experience in Aromatherapy and Lymphatic Drainage massage. Usually I receive comments with the word “heavenly” at the end of the Facial.

Very recently, after giving a Reflexology treatment the client said “It was so very relaxing:- It felt as if I was soaking in a lovely hot bath with aromatic oils. The hour went by so quickly” (Christine J, East Grinstead 03/09/09)

Facebook & Miscellaneous
  • I am getting more involved in my Aromatherapy association this year. As requested, I have been managing their facebook page since February and subsequently have been asked to stand for council on the PR committee, the elections are in October. Whether elected or not, it has been rewarding managing the Facebook page, encouraging discussion and communication between IFA members and Aromatherapy enthusiasts all over the world.
  • Lorraine Doron Aromatherapy and Reflexology also has a Facebook page, as does Feetivities. You are invited to support both me and Feetivities by joining and spreading the word to your friends. If you already are on facebook, just click on the links in this paragraph to join.
  • I am looking forward to a day workshop on “Baby Reflex” in the beginning of November. Reflexology could be so useful to parents with babies.

Baby reflex is a calming and relaxing treatment of Reflexology for babies and toddlers which was developed by Jenny Lee, herself a Chartered Physiotherapist and Qualified Reflexologist, following fifteen years of her research into the application of Reflexology to asthmatic children.

Part of this long period of research was supported and funded by THE FOUNDATION FOR INTEGRATED MEDICINE (FIM) and took place over twenty different regions all over the UK.

Preschool, Girl Guides and Weddings!

It’s been a couple of months since I wrote my last newsletter. Thankfully I have been busy and keeping my head above the water in this economic climate.

Over the last few months, I have being presented with a few interesting opportunities taking me out of the therapy room and into the community:

On 21st March I donated a marathon of taster Reflexology treatments in aid of the Yarborough Preschool in East Grinstead. I was giving the treatments for over 3 hours and the demand was so great that I did not have time to drink my cuppa.

on 28th March I was asked to come and give foot massages at a wedding in the lovely Ashdown Park Hotel. This really was a novel idea and I was not sure how it would work but it proved to be really popular. A room was designated for the guests to come and enjoy a quiet, restful space. I put candles in the room and relaxing music. I bought a colleague along and we massaged feet from 8.30pm till around 11.30pm! The lovely bride read out to me some of the comments from thank you letters that she received later: many found this little treat one of the highlights of their evening.

If you know of anybody who might be interested in this kind of service for a wedding or function, I am happy to provide the service for them. (Fee on application)

on 14th April, I found myself at Blacklands Girl Guiding Camp, teaching hand and foot massage to 20 or so eager and lively 10 -15 year old girls. The Girls were from the Canterbury Girl Guides and the session was part of their “Chocolate, Chill and Pamper” programme for the camp. It was a tiny space but the girls were very good and paired up enthusiastically to learn some basic massage skills. Every body seemed to have fun and take some knowledge away with then.

So life is varied and not dull. I continue to tutor music to adults with learning difficulties every Wednesday and Thursday. I have entertained senior citizens in a few retirement homes over the last few months as well. I am happy to take bookings for Golden Oldies Sing-a- Longs.

I also still am selling Nutrimetics and my own Essential Oils and Aromatherapy Products. If there are any massage oils or Aromatherapy products that you would like me to make for you, give me a call and I can tell you if your request is possible. Very recently,  I have been asked and have made blends and massage oils to help with exam stress; problems with joints and skin; and detoxification.

New Testimonials

When my husband and I had been trying to conceive for over a year I started to research ways of boosting my fertility.  After reading a lot of positive comments regarding reflexology and increased fertility I decided to contact Lorraine.  After just 7 sessions I was delighted to discover I was pregnant.  I now have a gorgeous and healthy 7 week old baby boy.

May I say how grateful I am for your last session.  As you know, I had this chest infection that is going round, with a deep cough that was painful and tight.  Even during the reflexology session I could feel the tightness easing, and after I returned home, my whole chest relaxed.  Although still coughing, the change meant that I could experience that I am now on the mend, rather than getting worse.
Thank you so much.  I have started using the aromatherapy oils as well.  I look forward to seeing you soon.  Love,  Kirsteen.    January 2009

I received this by email last night:I would like to purchase three bottles of Lavender oil from you dear for my daughter in law in Australia.  She has told me it is the best one she has ever tried and as I am going to see her at christmas I would like to be able to take her some. Sue F Groombridge

My excellent Organic French  Lavender has been used and loved all over the world; France, Israel, Australia, Ireland, Spain.

9.00 am.This morning I could not bring myself to go to the swimming pool . The thought of the hassle of all the preparation and then battling for a lane etc. I just was not in the mood.

I often do Yoga, especially when I have a back or neck ache and It helps a lot. I often recommend that my clients learn Yoga. I actually learned my routine from a video many years ago.  Not many of my clients take my advice. Probable because they prefer to be helped by my healing massage or Reflexology treatments.

However it’s not always possible to get to a therapist just as the tension and pain is kicking in. That is when Yoga or stretching of some kind is invaluable.

That leads me to what I did this morning instead of going swimming……..I turned on SKY 275 and had my own private Yoga session. A client of mine told me about this channel “Body in Balance”. It is basically lots of Yoga and I think maybe Pilates (not sure) lessons one after the other. All in the comfort of your home.

I thoroughly enjoyed my private lesson, learned some new Yoga postures and I feel great now.

Have a great day.

Lorraine
